My personal playlist runs the gamut from James Brown to Patsy Cline, Hank Williams to The Drifters, Otis Redding to Ray Price, Nancy Wilson (the jazz singer) to Delbert McClinton, Sam Cooke to Marty Robbins, Chicago to Tower of Power, and everything in between, but there’s one artist who drew me to music like a magnet…
His name…Elvis Aron Presley. My earliest recollection of hearing the music that changed my life was being a little kid on vacation in Florida. It must have been 1956, because I distinctively remember hearing this amazing, exciting voice coming through the radio everywhere we went. At the pool, in the shops, in the restaurants, it was “Hound Dog” or “Don’t Be Cruel”, and from then on, I’ve been hooked!
Over his career, I was fortunate to see him live on five occasions. I have seen many, many artists in concert throughout my long tenure in the music business, but no one has even come close to the impact his music has had on me. He was without a doubt, the most charismatic performer I’ve ever seen on stage.
So, I guess it depends on my mood when it comes to my play list. Suffice to say, I like anything sung with soul & feeling, but as my song says… there ain’t nothing like hopping in my car, turning on the CD player & “Cruisin’ with the King!”
